MKR 2017: ‘Paleo’ Pete Evans says his critics are ‘full of lies’

MY Kitchen Rules[1]’ controversial co-host Pete Evans[2] has taken a sword to critics of his controversial paleo diet, claiming he’s the victim of fake news and “bought” science.

Attacked for advocating breastfeeding mothers use camel’s milk and broth stock, the Channel 7 star claimed a conspiracy by mainstream media had wilfully lied about his caveman diet as part of a broader agenda processed food suppliers to discredit him.

Blaming the media for misrepresenting him for online ‘clickbait,’ he said the key accusations levelled against him had been “full of lies.”

“The media said that I said to replace breast milk with broth. Never have I said that but the media reported it[3]. They put that out there into the space and that got regurgitated ... and that becomes ‘Pete Evans says this ...’ We’ve never said that. Recently it happened with camel milk. We don’t promote dairy from any species, right. We promote mother’s milk first and foremost. Then, like every other animal, once they’ve had enough they go on to eat that species’ specific diet. So the journalist came out and said ‘Pete Evans promotes camel’s milk for babies instead of breast milk.’ Never have we said that,” he said.

Turning the tables on those charged with promoting his TV programs and recipe books, Evans said: “if someone wrote something that was actually the truth I’d clap and say ‘finally there’s a good journalist out there,” arguing “the more stories that keep being regurgitated and are full of lies just proves to me what a terrible state this [media] industry is in at the moment.”

Clearly agitated by the coverage, Evans added: “at the end of the day I’m telling people to eat meat and three veg. That’s it in a fricken nutshell. It’s meat and three veg and if anyone finds that weird, they should look at themselves in the mirror.”

Health experts and doctors have warned against his fan postings on everything from not using sunscreen[7] and avoiding fluoride in water, to[8] supporting anti-vaccination campaigners.

His MKR co-host Manu Feildel[9] defended the food choices of his friend of 15 years.

“Look at all the shelves in your supermarket and the labels behind. If it doesn’t give you ingredients, words, surely there’s something wrong with the planet. It’s as simple as that ... all these numbers [chemicals], if you start looking at the labels on the food products, surely you should think ‘what am I putting in my body?’”

Evans accused food giants like Coca-Cola of corrupting the science and funding campaigns against healthy-eating advocates like him.

“You can pay for science these days,” he alleged. “It’s proven ... look what Coca-Cola has done with dietitians and nutritionists in the last couple of decades. They paid to have certain results published and they paid certain journalists to get that information out there ... it’s blatant.”

In a more amicable footnote, he said: “I don’t have an issue with [the criticism] because every time one of these stories come out that is a lie, people who read that will either get into a debate about it, or they will question it. The proof is in the pudding ... I still have not met one person who has adopted what we promote that has become worse.”
