PRIMAL, SUSTAINABLE SUSTENANCE: Paleo Advocate Nora Gedgaudaus
Health expert Nora Gedgaudas speaks frequently about nutrition and the Paleo Diet, which she describes as “a lifestyle inspired by a greater desire for truly foundational health and well-being, based on logical and scientifically-identified ancestral principles.” Her first book, Primal Body, Primal Mind: Beyond the Paleo Diet, published in 2011, details her research into our Paleolithic hunter-gatherer ancestors and how they subsisted on a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. Gedgaudas’ latest book, Primal Fat Burner: Live Longer, Slow Aging, Super-Power Your Brain, and Save Your Life with a High-Fat, Low-Carb Paleo Diet, released in January of 2017, is an updated edition on how to live a longer and healthier life, complete with a 21-day meal plan and corresponding recipes.
Gedgaudas is a preeminent expert on healthy living practices, but her interest in behavior and the natural world began at the early age of six, when she fell in love with wolves. After entering college and taking courses in pre-med and nutrition, she felt disillusioned by Western Medicine—as though she was missing something crucial in her education. Fate intervened in 1991, when her childhood dream came true: she spent a summer with wolves on Ellesmere Island in Canada’s High Arctic Tundra, 500 miles from the North Pole. Working with Dr. L. David Mech, she conducted behavioral research on a remote wolf family. She was exposed to Inuit culture during this time, which follows a natural, fat and meat-based diet. These experiences created a foundation for Gedgaudas’ health interests, and, inspired by Dr. Weston A. Price’s book, “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration,” she began researching and eventually advocating for a primal diet.
In addition to promoting an ancestral way of eating, Gedgaudas is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, a Board-Certified Holistic Nutrition consultant, a Board-Certified clinical Neurofeedback Specialist and a Certified Gluten Practitioner. She also somehow finds the time to manage a private practice in Portland, Oregon. Additionally, she speaks out about cannabis and the “drug of choice” correlations she began to notice as a Neurofeedback provider, finding that almost every drug had a specific tendency attached to it—meaning people medicate to generate a certain feeling, and there is a clear connection between the substance and desired effect.
“…cannabis seems to have the fewest and least dangerous potential adverse consequences of any recreational or pharmacologic compound.”
Generally, users of cannabis are seeking neurological stabilization, which is what cannabis does—it provides a stabilizing effect on brain function, hence it’s use as a treatment for seizures. She predicts an “explosion of exciting research and insight” into the medicinal potential of cannabis. Still, while any substance has the possibility for abuse, “cannabis seems to have the fewest and least dangerous potential adverse consequences of any recreational or pharmacologic compound.”
Gedgaudas frequently discusses the benefits of a Paleo Diet at lectures, as well as on radio and television programs. She attributes her natural ease while speaking in front of groups to her early career as a guitar player and singer. She encourages people to buy free-range, organic meat, and to develop relationships with the farmers who grow our food, as well as respect the lives of the animals who provide us with sustenance. She feels connected to nature, meditating at least an hour every day. And while she doesn’t adhere to any organized form of religion, she focuses on living her life in a way that makes sense to her, concentrating on what gives her life meaning. Read one of her books, or listen to one of her podcasts and be inspired to live a healthier life.
