Paleo Snacks You Need To Try
When you’re on a specific diet, snacks can be huge for helping you stay on track without feeling like you’re ready to devour the next remotely edible thing that crosses your path. But finding snacks that fit your dietary needs can be tricky, especially if you’re on something like the Paleo diet[1].
In case you’re only vaguely familiar with it, the Paleo diet encourages fans to eat like a caveman would. That means this diet is big on things you can hunt and gather, like meat, fish, nuts, regional fruits and vegetables, leafy greens, and seeds, and not so into pastas, dairy products, and cereals.
It’s a popular diet for a reason—plenty of people swear that going Paleo has helped them eat better and feel amazing. Paleo focuses on eating less processed foods[2], whole foods more often, and less added sugar, which is definitely a plus, says Beth Warren, R.D.N., founder of Beth Warren Nutrition[3] and author of Living A Real Life With Real Food. But New York-based R.D. Jessica Cording[4] points out that it can be hard to sustain, largely because there are plenty of popular ingredients on the “do not eat” list like grains, refined oils, sugar, and alcohol.
Of course, any diet that has restrictive elements can make it harder than usual to find the right foods to eat—and snacking is no different. "Snacks can seem like a challenge," when you go Paleo, admits registered dietitian Sonya Angelone, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, but some companies are now making Paleo-friendly snacks—and you can make your own. You just might need to think outside the box. "Snacks don’t have to look like what we typically think of as snacks," she says. "They can simply be smaller portions of meals." To get you started, we rounded up some epic Paleo-friendly snacks. Try one or all to nourish your inner caveman:
